Congress member Carolyn Maloney delivered a decisive victory in New York’s Democratic primary on Tuesday, swamping her well-funded challenger. A longtime ally of NOW, Maloney has been a strong champion for women’s rights, supporting reproductive rights, promoting economic justice for women and pursuing equality for all through such actions as reintroducing the Equal Rights Amendment.
Also victorious in the Sept. 14 primary was Ann McLane Kuster, who is running for the open seat in New Hampshire’s 2nd congressional district. By a wide margin, Kuster defeated a conservative Democratic opponent who had tried to paint her as too progressive. Kuster is passionately pro-choice and spoke out against the Stupak-Pitts Amendment. She worked to advance same-sex marriage in the state of New Hampshire and has been active on health care issues.
The National Organization for Women Political Action Committee (NOW PAC) proudly endorsed Maloney and Kuster and looks forward to supporting them as they build toward the Nov. 2 midterm election. “Proven legislators like Carolyn Maloney need allies on Capitol Hill,” said NOW PAC Chair Terry O’Neill. “I’m thrilled at the opportunity to send her reinforcements, like the staunchly feminist Ann McLane Kuster.”
NOW PAC congratulates its other endorsed candidates who secured primary victories last night. In Maryland: Rep. Donna Edwards (D), Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D), and Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D). In Massachusetts: Rep. John Olver (D), Rep. Jim McGovern (D), and Rep. Niki Tsongas (D). In New York: Rep. Dan Maffei (D). And in Wisconsin: Rep. Gwen Moore (D), Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D), and Rep. Steve Kagen (D).
