2014 NOW Regional Conferences
Attend the conference in your region this spring and help elect national leadership!
NOW’s grassroots base is divided into nine U.S. regions. In even years, these regions elect members to serve two-year terms on the National NOW Board. Regional conferences take place in the months of March, April and May and are open to any NOW member. Find out more about your region’s conference below. Updated information will be posted as it becomes available. Bookmark this page and check back periodically.
Eligibility to vote: All members of the region in good standing whose dues are received by the national organization or its appropriate subunits at least 90 days prior to the conference and who are present may vote. Eligibility to run for the National NOW Board: Any member who has been a member in good standing for at least two years immediately prior to the date of the election may run. Board members must remain residents of the region from which they are elected.

NOW Mid-Atlantic Regional Board Election Meeting – Saturday, May 31, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. ET
DC NOW and 51st State NOW invite you to the NOW Mid-Atlantic Regional Board Election meeting at the Sewall-Belmont House & Museum, home of the historic National Woman’s Party. The Museum is accessible, meeting the standards of the accessibility checklist.

The Museum is located on a corner that offers street parking nearby, and is a 10-15 minute walk or brief cab ride from Union Station Metro on the Red Line and Capitol South Metro on the Blue and Orange Lines. Union Station is the location of Amtrak trains arriving to and departing from DC, and the Museum is also accessible via metro and cab from National Airport in Virginia.
The meeting will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. Here is the agenda:

Patricia Ireland – Keynote Speaker – “The Future of Feminism: Forward Together”
A call to action to work in coalition toward American women’s equality. This exciting conference features keynote speaker, Ms Patricia Ireland, author of What Women Want and long time president of NOW. NOW activists and leaders at this conference will engage in the continuing process of modernizing the organization’s structure. Workshops covering how to use social media to the best effect, Paycheck Fairness Act activism and working in coalition state-wide are offered. The feminist movement is still toiling to unseat privileged men and women in office who would stall and end women’s reproductive freedoms, block the end to gender discrimination in pay affecting women and their families, allow religion to discriminate in many areas of women’s lives including hiring; the list goes on. How do we best deal with and bring to an end ancient thinking and obstruction of women’s advancement?
Please come, learn, share, teach. The movement needs you.
Patricia Ireland has been improving women’s lives for most of her own. As the longest-serving president from 1991 to 2001, Ireland helped move NOW to the forefront of the political scene, build a strong, effective women’s movement and establish herself as a groundbreaking activist. With a deep understanding of the connections between women’s rights and other human rights issues, Ireland forged bonds between NOW and allies in the anti-poverty, civil rights, disability rights and LGBT communities, strengthening and broadening NOW’s commitment to justice for women in all of our multiple, often overlapping, communities. Her activism ranged from serving on the board of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition to getting arrested at the White House over the continued ban on lesbians and gays in the military. She led the 1992 Global Feminist Conference in the U.S. and represented NOW around the world. Ireland created NOW’s Elect Women for a Change campaign, which played a pivotal role in making 1992 the “Year of the Woman.” Today Ireland continues fighting for social justice, in her professional work — as a labor attorney in Miami, she represents unions and their members — and in her volunteer activism. She co-chairs the National NOW Board Advisory Committee and is a key advisor to the NOW/PAC. In Florida, she is organizing the women’s community in support of Nan Rich’s campaign to oust Rick Scott from the governor’s mansion.
